Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipstick - Old vs. New Formula

Hi everyone!

My apologies once again for my relative absence lately. Life was crazy around the holidays, I broke my tailbone, had a nasty bout with the flu, and began hearing back from graduate schools regarding in-person interviews. One of my goals for this new year is to start blogging more again, so hopefully you will hear from me more often again soon!

You may have heard that Kat Von D recently changed the formula for her popular Studded Kiss Lipsticks. I honestly loved the old formula, and regardless of its faults it was still my favorite line of bullet lipsticks. I picked up a bunch of shades when they were all on sale to make room for new lipsticks as I was apprehensive as to whether or not I would fall in love with the new formula. Luckily enough, Influenster sent me a brand-new Studded Kiss Lipstick with the new formula free for review, so I can now tell you all my thoughts on the old vs. the new product!

The new Studded Kiss formula was promised to be creamier and more opaque than the old formula lipsticks. In fact, they have even been renamed and are now called Studded Kiss Creme Lipsticks.

My biggest qualm with the old formula was that the lipsticks always tug on my lips when I apply them. This leads to skipping areas on my lips where I have to go back and reapply to get even coverage. The matte shades feel marginally drying upon application and have a tendency to cling to dry patches on my lips, but they do not dry out my lips nearly to the same extent that liquid lipsticks do. The pigmentation on all of the shades that I have is good, although the darker shades can apply somewhat patchy in comparison to the more nude-toned shades I have. All of the shades that I own last longer on me than any other bullet lipstick I have previously tried - several hours, meals and drinks included. Ultimately, the shade range has been unique enough and the longevity satisfactory enough for me to overlook the downsides to the old formula.

The new Creme formula is a total 180 from the old formula. It genuinely does feel creamy and smooth immediately upon application as the name suggests. In fact, it feels hydrating in comparison to the old formula. The new formula lipstick no longer skips when applying either. There is one-swipe pigmentation, which eliminates the issue of having to go back to reapply onto areas of my lips that look patchy.

The shade that Influenster sent me is Ludwig which has a satin-matte finish rather than a true, flat matte like the old formula. The new satin-matte formula continues to feel comfortable on my lips all day. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it lasts on my lips for the same amount of time as the old formula, despite the fact that most creamy lipsticks wear off easily, especially after eating and drinking.

From top to bottom: Studded Kiss Creme Lipstick in Ludwig (new formula), Studded Kiss Lipstick in Mercy (old formula)

As you can see from the swatches Ludwig (top) in the new Creme formula appears to look more hydrating even to the naked eye. There is also a huge difference in the opacity of the two formulas. While Mercy (bottom) in the old formula looks streaky and patchy, Ludwig gives rich, even pigmentation with just one swipe.

The new Studded Kiss Creme Lipstick formula is truly the best of both worlds. I now have a bullet lipstick option that is matte and long-wearing yet is not uncomfortably dry. While the old formulation holds a special place in my heart, this new formula is a huge upgrade without a doubt. They remind me a lot of the Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche formula, so if you’re a fan of that then I think you’ll really enjoy the new Studded Kiss formula. Best of all, Kat Von D rolled out 40 shades in three finishes (satin-matte, glimmer, and metallic) in this fantastic new formula, so there are bound to be great options for everyone.

Beauty Christmas Wishlist

Happy Wednesday, everyone!

The countdown to Christmas is ON! This has been the longest week of my life because I’m so eager to spend the holidays with my loved ones. I hope you are all looking forward to a very happy and healthy holiday season!

In the spirit of the holidays, I thought I would do a post on the beauty products that are on my holiday wishlist this year. I love the gift sets and products that come out around the holiday season, and this year’s releases have both surprised and impressed me! Without any further ado, lets dive in!

Tarte Tartelette Toasted Eyeshadow Palette: Many people rolled their eyes at this palette when it first debuted so it’s “just another neutral palette.” However, I was instantly attracted to it! I actually don’t own very many neutral eyeshadow palettes, especially not ones that contain orange-toned shades that complement my eyes super well. Although I do have the J Cat Beauty Sunset Palette, the packaging is very bulky. Tarte’s palette is compact enough to easily travel with which also greatly appeals to me. On top of all of that, I’ve heard many people rave over the Tartelette eyeshadow formula but have not yet gotten a chance to try it out myself. Overall, I am really drawn to the Tartelette Toasted palette.

Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick Set: I like to think of myself as a queen of vampy lips, so this set instantly called to me. I love that this set contains those dark, bold shades that I myself love, but also a nice mix of more wearable neutral shades for everyday use. I already know that I like the formula of these lipsticks too, so this is right up my alley! Kat Von D is my favorite brand in makeup simply because of the uniqueness of all of her products. She killed it with last year’s liquid lipstick set, so I have no doubt that this one will be equally as amazing. Be still, my beating heart!

Stila Eye for Elegance Liquid Eyeshadow Set: If you’re a reader of my blog or follow me on Instagram, you likely know that I am absolutely obsessed with Stila’s new Glitter & Glow liquid eyeshadows. I have two full-sized shades and fully intend on buying many more, as I’ve converted to using these nearly every time I want to do an easy, yet fancy eye look. Stila’s holiday set contains three minis with the Glitter & Glow formula and 3 shades with their new Shimmer & Glow formula, which I think would be absolutely perfect for everyday looks. Every shade in the set really calls to me and none of them are the shades I currently own, so I super am eager to try this!

NEST Eau de Parfum Collection Coffret: Confession – I am still using some of the Bath & Body Works sprays I’ve had since high school. I figured it’s about time I grow up and become a full grown professional adult who wears perfume. After listening to a Fat Mascara podcast episode (beauty lovers, you must listen to this podcast!) with the owner of NEST, I decided that I really wanted to try some of their perfumes. The packaging is gorgeous and their scents sounds luxurious. Conveniently, they have a set of minis for the holidays containing samplers of a variety of scents. This would be the perfect way for me to ease into the world of perfume while establishing which notes I do and don’t like in fragrances!

CoverFx Custom Enhancer Drop Set: Beauty gurus have had me curious about these magical drops for months on end now. I’ve heard such amazing things about the bronzer and highlighters, but I haven’t bit the bullet to buy a full-sized product yet since they’re quite pricey. Plus, this product only requires 1-2 drops to get the full effect, so I realistically could not see myself using up a full-sized highlighter. CoverFx released a set for the holidays with four mini highlighters in a variety of shades. This set is ideal for me to try CoverFx’s unique formula without being wasteful.

Did you see anything here that’s also on your holiday wishlist this year? What’s the one beauty product you want the most? Leave a comment below, and happy holidays to you all!

Review: Maple Holistics Argan Oil Conditioner

Happy Wednesday, everyone!

Exciting news! I have officially submitted my applications for graduate school. That means I’m back and ready to get back to regular blogging. Thank you so much to those of you who have continued to support me during my relative absence these past few months! If you’re looking for more regular content, be sure to follow my Instagram where I post daily.

Today I’m going to be reviewing Maple Holistics Argan Oil Conditioner, which retails for $11.95. You may remember that I reviewed Maple Holistics Tea Tree Oil Shampoo a few months ago. To recap that post, Maple Holistics is a beauty brand that only creates natural and organic products that are super reasonably priced. All of their products are cruelty-free and made in the USA. Maple Holistics also offers a 100% money-back guarantee if you’re unsatisfied with your purchase in any way, which is super exciting!

If you’re interested in delving into the world of natural beauty products, Maple Holistics has an awesome blog on their website that provides information about natural hair, skin, and bath products. They write about commonly used ingredients, new methods in skincare, and more. Check out their super informative post about dermarolling here.

Maple Holistics has been kind enough to send me both their Tea Tree Oil Shampoo and their Argan Oil Conditioner free for review. As always, this does not influence my opinion of the products in any way – you can always be 100% honest with you guys! More info can be found on my Disclaimer page.

The Argan Oil Conditioner’s ingredient list includes many goodies to help your hair live up to the very best of its capabilities. Argan oil, jojoba oil, and shea butter are three holy grail ingredients for moisturizing your scalp and hair to leave your locks soft, shiny, and silky smooth. Green tea, hibiscus, aloe vera, and sea buckthorn all help to stimulate hair growth. Botanical keratin increases your hair’s strength, elasticity, and overall health, and pomegranate strengthens your hair follicles. And for those of you who are sensitive to scented products, you will be thrilled to learn that this conditioner is entirely fragrance-free!

As you may remember, the Tea Tree Oil shampoo has done amazing things for the health of both my hair and scalp. My only complaint is that it made my hair tangly and somewhat difficult to brush through after getting out of the shower. However, I’ve been loving it so much that it has now become the only shampoo I use.

With some conditioners, my hair near my scalp looks super oily. However, that is not the case with this Argan Oil Conditioner at all. While it does moisturize my hair enough to remedy tangling, my hair looks moisturized and nourished rather than oily. My hair feels so soft and smooth immediately after washing the conditioner out.

I have also noticed that after using the Tea Tree Oil Shampoo and Argan Oil Conditioner together, my hair is more voluminous than it has ever been, even when using non-natural shampoos that are specifically designed to add volume to your hair. The shampoo/conditioner duo has also brought out some really lovely natural texture in my hair that I didn’t even know was possible! I’ve always had straight, limp, fine hair that looks boring no matter how I style it. But this new haircare regimen gives me some really lovely soft waves. I now can throw some sea salt spray in my hair in the morning to pump up the volume and texture even more, and that is all the styling I need to do for the day! I’m hooked, and absolutely loving the results I’ve been getting from using the Tea Tree Oil Shampoo and Argan Oil Conditioner in conjunction with one another.

Overall, I am super impressed by the Argan Oil Conditioner, especially when paired with my new HG Tea Tree Oil Shampoo. I would highly recommend checking out Maple Holistics products if you are interested in testing out some effective, affordable natural products. Maple Holistics even offers a free sample program in which you can try out a product of your choice without spending a dime! Be sure to check it out today.

Review: Milk Makeup Blur Stick

Hi everyone!

I'm back! After a nearly month long hiatus, I am back with a review for you all today. Apologies for my prolonged absence - I've been applying for graduate school and my life has been a bit hectic lately. All good things, though!

The product I'll be talking to you guys about today is the Milk Makeup Blur Stick. I received this product complimentary for review from Influenster. If you're interested in getting free beauty products for your honest review too, check out my referral link here.

Although I did receive this product for free, that absolutely does not influence my review of it in any way. Check out my Disclaimer tab for more deets.

I was really thrilled to receive this product as my skin has been acting out like crazy lately. For some reason I have started to get really oily in my T-zone, something I've never really had to deal with much before. My pores have also been out of control lately. With all the life changes I've been experiencing, my skin has been understandably stressed!

The Blur Stick's main claims are that it is able to minimize the appearance of pores up to 68% and that it absorbs oil to prep your skin for makeup application with smooth, matte finish. Since these are a few of my major concerns at the moment, this truly sounded like a match made in heaven.

To start off, I'll say that the formula of this isn't like any other stick product I've used before. It's silicone-free and oil-free, and almost feels waxy when I apply it to my face yet is simultaneously pretty dry. The dry texture does tug on my skin a bit - it does not glide easily over my face by any means. Despite all of that, it somehow feels like I haven't applied anything to my skin at all. Because of that I end up doubling up on product coverage in some places accidentally. I've found that if you apply too much the product begins to ball up on itself and fall off of your face.

I have to be honest and say that I am seriously disappointed with how this performs. I've been using it daily for over a week now just to give it a solid chance, but I am really not a fan.

To start off, I really don't notice a huge reduction in the appearance of my pores. I do see maybe a tiny bit of blurring, but nothing to write home about. Also, it is not a spectacular primer. I noticed today that my foundation began to break up on my face and settle into my fine lines about halfway through my work day. Admittedly I do not know which foundation formula would work best with this as a primer, since it is neither silicone-based nor water-based. So, take my foundation woes with a grain of salt, as the foundations in my collection may not have formulas that are compatible with the Blur Stick.

I unfortunately also still experience oiliness in my T-zone when I use the Blur Stick, although the onset of my oil slick may be delayed by an hour or two. It is worth noting that is the case when I'm not wearing setting powder, as I wanted to see how well it could perform on its own while initially trialing this. When I apply setting powder, my T-zone stays set pretty much all day.

As much as I wanted this to be a revolutionary wonder product, the Blur Stick does essentially nothing for me. Whomp whomp. The Blur Stick retails for $36 and I do not believe that it is worth that price. I would rather splurge and purchase a pore-filling primer that does a way better job (I'm lookin' at you, Benefit Porefessional) and apply setting powder over my foundation to stay matte throughout the day. From what I've seen, reviews on this product are quite a mixed bag, so your view may vary!

Review: Living Proof Style Lab Collection

Happy Wednesday, everyone!

I hope your weeks are off to an amazing start! I’m back with a review of four products from Living Proof’s Style Lab line. These products were sent to me complimentary from Influenster for testing purposes. As always, receiving these products complimentary does not sway my opinions in any way (see my Disclaimer page for more info.) If you’re interested in also receiving some products from Influenster, sign up through my referral link here!

In this Voxbox, I received four travel size version of Living Proof’s Flex Shaping Hairspray, Blowout, T.B.D. Multi-Tasking Styler, and Prime Style Extender.

Flex Shaping Hairspray: This was my favorite product in the box. The first thing I noticed is that it does not have that strong chemically scent like most hairsprays do. In fact, I rather enjoy the smell of this spray. I was impressed to find that my hair is able to maintain some bounce and volume throughout the work day after quickly styling my hair and finishing it off with this every morning. But the main reason I fell in love with this hairspray is that it does not make my hair sticky or stiff to the touch. My hair is still soft and touchable even after applying a boatload of product. The best part about this is that it leaves your hair flexible, meaning you can reshape curls or brush out tight coils with ease!

The only downfall I’ve found is that it does not have industrial-strength holding powers. I hairspray my bangs every day to keep them in place, but my bangs are disturbed when a strong wind blows. I also tested this out during a night of bar-hopping when I was out in humid Nashville, and my curls fell noticeably by the end of the night. If you’re looking for a hairspray that will hold your hairstyle through the apocalypse, this product is not for you. However, if you’re in the market for a light, everyday hairspray, you really can’t beat this.

Blowout: I’m going to be honest with y’all really quick and admit that I really have no clue what I’m doing with a blowdryer. I am super intimidated by diffusers, and quite frankly not coordinated enough to juggle both a blowdryer and round brush while sectioning my hair. For that reason, I tend to let my hair air dry just to avoid the hassle. I mention this because I am admittedly not the type of person this product is marketed for, so take everything I say with a grain of salt!

This product is great because it protects your hair from temperatures up to 450 degrees. This meant I had one less product I needed to worry about adding to my hair routine before styling, which I greatly appreciated. It also smells similar to the hairspray which I love!

After using this and hilariously struggling to effectively blow out my hair, I found that my hair looked and felt incredibly soft and smooth. I focused spraying this product towards my roots and gained noticeably more volume than I ever do after simply air drying my hair. Like the Flex Shaping Hairspray, the Blowout product did not make my hair crunchy at all. I was left with hair that convinced me that I should probably transition over to the world of blowdrying soon if it means achieving bounce, shine, and volume like that!

volume like that!

T.B.D. Multi-Tasking Styler: You all know I’m a huge sucker for a multi-use product, so this one was definitely my second favorite product of the bunch. You can use this styling product in a multitude of ways – so far I’ve used it when blowdrying damp hair, taming beachy waves after curling my hair with my straightener, and applying it to my dry, limp hair to add some texture and bounce. This product is on par with the others in that it made my hair look smooth and feel soft to the touch. The results of my styling also last quite a bit longer than they typically do, as my hair has the tendency to fall fast. I really love the versatility of this styler and will continue frequently using it!

Prime Style Extender: I used this product on my hair after styling it for a night of going out on the town for my friend’s 21st birthday. I knew that we would be dancing all night which would give my hair ample time to begin look disastrous. To my great surprise, my loose waves actually held all night! To my even greater surprise, my hair still looked great the next morning as well! Although my hair had definitely fell a bit, I ended up not even needing to style my hair that morning as I loved the way my deconstructed waves from the previous night looked. I have also read that people use this in lieu of using a dry shampoo in order to get more days in between their washes, so that is next on my list to try.

I wanted to hate this box because the full-sized versions of these products are a bit pricey, but it’s undeniable that Living Proof makes fabulous products that are absolutely worth the price. I will definitely pick up the Flex Shaping Hairspray in the future for everyday use since it’s only ~$10 more than drugstore hairsprays. I also will pick up the T.B.D. Multi-Tasking Styler as it fits my hair-styling needs perfectly. Thank you Influenster and Living Proof for allowing me to find products that I’ve fallen in love with!
