Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipstick - Old vs. New Formula

Hi everyone!

My apologies once again for my relative absence lately. Life was crazy around the holidays, I broke my tailbone, had a nasty bout with the flu, and began hearing back from graduate schools regarding in-person interviews. One of my goals for this new year is to start blogging more again, so hopefully you will hear from me more often again soon!

You may have heard that Kat Von D recently changed the formula for her popular Studded Kiss Lipsticks. I honestly loved the old formula, and regardless of its faults it was still my favorite line of bullet lipsticks. I picked up a bunch of shades when they were all on sale to make room for new lipsticks as I was apprehensive as to whether or not I would fall in love with the new formula. Luckily enough, Influenster sent me a brand-new Studded Kiss Lipstick with the new formula free for review, so I can now tell you all my thoughts on the old vs. the new product!

The new Studded Kiss formula was promised to be creamier and more opaque than the old formula lipsticks. In fact, they have even been renamed and are now called Studded Kiss Creme Lipsticks.

My biggest qualm with the old formula was that the lipsticks always tug on my lips when I apply them. This leads to skipping areas on my lips where I have to go back and reapply to get even coverage. The matte shades feel marginally drying upon application and have a tendency to cling to dry patches on my lips, but they do not dry out my lips nearly to the same extent that liquid lipsticks do. The pigmentation on all of the shades that I have is good, although the darker shades can apply somewhat patchy in comparison to the more nude-toned shades I have. All of the shades that I own last longer on me than any other bullet lipstick I have previously tried - several hours, meals and drinks included. Ultimately, the shade range has been unique enough and the longevity satisfactory enough for me to overlook the downsides to the old formula.

The new Creme formula is a total 180 from the old formula. It genuinely does feel creamy and smooth immediately upon application as the name suggests. In fact, it feels hydrating in comparison to the old formula. The new formula lipstick no longer skips when applying either. There is one-swipe pigmentation, which eliminates the issue of having to go back to reapply onto areas of my lips that look patchy.

The shade that Influenster sent me is Ludwig which has a satin-matte finish rather than a true, flat matte like the old formula. The new satin-matte formula continues to feel comfortable on my lips all day. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it lasts on my lips for the same amount of time as the old formula, despite the fact that most creamy lipsticks wear off easily, especially after eating and drinking.

As you can see from the swatches Ludwig (top) in the new Creme formula appears to look more hydrating even to the naked eye. There is also a huge difference in the opacity of the two formulas. While Mercy (bottom) in the old formula looks streaky and patchy, Ludwig gives rich, even pigmentation with just one swipe.

The new Studded Kiss Creme Lipstick formula is truly the best of both worlds. I now have a bullet lipstick option that is matte and long-wearing yet is not uncomfortably dry. While the old formulation holds a special place in my heart, this new formula is a huge upgrade without a doubt. They remind me a lot of the Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche formula, so if you’re a fan of that then I think you’ll really enjoy the new Studded Kiss formula. Best of all, Kat Von D rolled out 40 shades in three finishes (satin-matte, glimmer, and metallic) in this fantastic new formula, so there are bound to be great options for everyone.
